same programs .
. . same scientists . . . new home . . . These educational
field workshops have been offered under the GeoScience Adventures name since
the year 2000! They are now being offered by the Bighorn Basin Geoscience
Center in Greybull, Wyoming. Looking for Fun
and Adventure? Need teacher professional recertification credits? Do you love fossils and, in particular, dinosaurs? Just want
to learn more about the Earth Sciences? Our workshops
are very popular with K-12 teachers and advanced students who need college
credit or professional recertification. They are also quite popular
with adults who are interested in spending three days in the field with
professional scientists - the freewheeling discussions are very enlightening!
Several of the workshops will visit world-class dinosaur fossil-bearing
localities with geoscientists who are currently conducting research on these
deposits. A family vacation in the ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Educational
Workshops – 2012 From Paper to Treasure – Learning the basics of map reading, GPS, and Geocaching June 15 thru 17, 2012 Instructors: Kim Sowder (GISP) This workshop will teach you about U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps: how to read them, what’s contained in the border information, field applications and measurements, and how they can be used with a compass to practice location triangulation. Workshop participants will also be introduced to Geographic Information System (GIS) concepts (the technology behind Google Earth, Bing Maps, Yahoo Maps, and many others) as well as learning how to effectively utilize global positioning systems (GPS) in the field. With this knowledge, we will be ready for the field exercise in geocaching! We’ll take maps, compasses, and GPS units out into the beautiful Big Horn Basin and surrounding area to see how mapping concepts are used in a real-world setting. Moderate hiking will be required. Bring a GPS unit if you have one. IntroDUCTION to Field Geology (New) June 25 thru 27, 2012 Instructors: Dr. Erik Kvale The Bighorn Basin in
Wyoming is the setting for one of the finest, natural, teaching laboratories
in the western hemisphere. Every major
time period (except the Silurian) is represented by rocks and fossils in this
area. We will spend three days looking at both terrestrial and marine
sequences that document the changing history of life during the last 600
million years. Teachers will be able to collect fossils for their classroom
activities. IntroDUCTION to Field PALEONTOLOGY (New) June 29 thru July 1, 2012 Instructors: Dr. Michael Brett-Surman,
Bob and Tina King The Bighorn Basin in Wyoming
is the setting for one of the finest, natural, teaching laboratories in the
western hemisphere. There are no less
than four major dinosaur digsites, and many
significant mammal sites, in the Bighorn Basin. Participants will see
dinosaur bones and footprints, visit fossil digsites,
and watch how professional paleontologists reconstruct the life of the past.
TV specials that misrepresent paleontology will also be discussed. NOTE: Participants should be physically able to spend three days in
the field in rugged open terrain, carrying their own water and
supplies. College and Professional
Certification Credits: University of Wyoming Outreach Program will offer
two (2) hours graduate credit
for each workshop (tentative). Copyright © 2010, 2011, 2012 Bighorn Basin
